Internships 2018

 

The Australian Embassy and Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna is offering a number of three-month internships spread out during 2018, the first commencing around end-January. The internships are to assist the Embassy on bilateral work such as research activities; on multilateral work such as with the UN and other international organisations and on public diplomacy. The position of an intern is an unpaid position.

 

The Embassy’s office hours are from 08:30 to 16:30 (Monday to Friday), and we would expect the intern to be available to work approximately 25 hours per week within these hours.  The Embassy is committed to allowing interns to take time to continue with their studies and the exact number of hours will be discussed with the successful candidate. 

 

The Australian Embassy and Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna undertakes a wide range of bilateral and multilateral functions. The Embassy is responsible for Australia’s relations with Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Kosovo, Slovakia and Slovenia; and is accredited to several UN and other international organisations in Vienna, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

 

Work on bilateral issues comprises providing a wide range of support including:

  • Assisting with arrangements for bilateral meetings;
  • Undertaking research;
  • Responding to general enquiries about Australia;
  • Assisting with official visits and updates to the contacts database;
  • Other duties as required.

 

Work on multilateral issues focusses on supporting the Permanent Mission, including by:

  • Assisting with arrangements for multilateral meetings;
  • Assisting in covering briefings and presentations;
  • Supporting visiting delegations with program development;
  • Research and background briefing;
  • Other duties as required.

 

Work on public diplomacy includes assisting the Embassy, including by:

  • Assisting with social media work (webpage, twitter, etc.);
  • Assisting with arrangements for events;
  • Assisting with mailouts and guest lists;
  • Other duties as required.

     

Selection criteria

 

The successful applicant is expected to have the following skills and abilities:

 

  1. Interest in international relations, foreign and trade policy;
  2. Research and report writing ability;
  3. Good facility in use of social media;
  4. Fluency in English, oral and written essential;
  5. Fluency in German, oral and written, for bilateral work highly desirable;
  6. Fluency in the language of non-resident countries of accreditation (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Kosovo, Slovakia and Slovenia) desirable;
  7. Good organisational skills.

Before commencing the successful applicant will need to provide a police clearance certificate and proof of social and health insurance cover in Austria.
