IAEA Extraordinary Board of Governors Meeting

IAEA Board of Governors

Extraordinary Meeting on Iran

National Statement

Statement by Mr Denis Cairney, Alternate Resident Representative to the IAEA

2 March 2026

Chair

For decades, Iran has been a destabilising force in the region and globally, through its nuclear and ballistic missile program, as well as its support for armed proxies and brutal acts of violence and intimidation.

It has long been recognised that Iran has not been complying with its nuclear non-proliferation obligations. The international community has been clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. But time and again, and despite repeated diplomatic efforts, Iran has refused to cooperate with the IAEA and provide the essential assurance that its nuclear program was exclusively peaceful.

Australia is closely monitoring the fast-evolving situation in the Middle East. We thank the IAEA for its important role in engaging with regional countries and monitoring for any nuclear safety impacts. Ensuring nuclear safety and security and the protection of civilians remains imperative. A lasting solution to this conflict must provide assurance that Iran can never develop a nuclear weapon and prevent Iran from threatening international peace and security.

Thank you, Chair.
