Agenda item 5(a): The conclusion of safeguards agreements and of additional protocols (if any)

22 November 2023

Statement by Ms Ruth Constantine, Alternate Resident Representative of Australia to the IAEA

Chair

We wish to congratulate Nauru on its decision to conclude an Additional Protocol (AP) to its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA), signed in 1984.

Chair

The Pacific region has a long-standing commitment to the international nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime, including through the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, or Treaty of Rarotonga. Nauru, like Australia, signed the Treaty 38 years ago and it continues to serve the region well.

We welcome the commitment of Nauru to strengthening IAEA safeguards and non-proliferation.

Thank you, Chair.
