NPT Safeguards Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran

IAEA Board of Governors Meeting

Statement by HE Mr Richard Sadleir, Resident Representative of Australia to the IAEA

Agenda Item 9(c): NPT Safeguards Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran

September 2020

I would like to emphasise Australia’s strong and continued support for the professional and dedicated work of the Director General and IAEA staff as they seek to implement the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol.

To this end, Australia welcomes the work of the Director General in eliciting a commitment from Iran to resume full cooperation with the Agency’s safeguards inspectors.

Strict adherence to IAEA safeguards obligations is an absolutely critical element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture.

The failure of any state to cooperate with the Agency, in accordance with obligations under Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements and their Additional Protocol, is a matter of deep concern.

The IAEA must be able to conduct its important safeguards work, including the analysis of all safeguards relevant material.

We call on Iran to promptly fulfil its commitments and comply with its safeguards obligations.

Consistent with previous decisions of the Board, we request that the Director General’s report GOV/2020/47 be made public according to past precedent, and ask that the Director General keep the Board informed on this issue.
