Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic

IAEA Board of Governors Meeting

Statement by Mr Stephen Hills, Alternate Representative of Australia to the IAEA

Agenda Item 7(d): Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic

3 March 2021

Australia would like to thank the Director General for the update he gave on implementation of safeguards in the Syrian Arab Republic during his introductory statement.

We would also like to once again thank the Secretariat for its continued work to address Syria’s non-compliance with its safeguards obligations.

Australia remains deeply concerned by Syria’s failure to address outstanding questions about its facilities and activities at the Dair Alzour site. We regret that there continues to be no progress on this matter.

Australia again urges Syria to fully cooperate with the Agency in line with the Resolution adopted by the Board of Governors on 9 June 2011.

Until this occurs, we will continue to draw attention to Syria’s non-compliance and remain firm in our view that this issue should remain on the Board of Governors agenda until it is satisfactorily resolved.
