Extraordinary Meeting on the Attacks on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE

National Statement

Statement by Dr Sarah Goodall, Alternate Resident Representative of Australia to the IAEA

5 June 2026

Chair,

Australia is deeply concerned by the attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates. We thank Director General Grossi for his briefing on this serious situation. The potential consequences of this attack for nuclear safety in the UAE, and the wider region, could have been grave.

We echo the Director General’s comments in stressing the paramount importance of adhering to the IAEA’s seven pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during armed conflict. Protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure and the environment remain imperative.

In the face of this attack, Australia expresses its strong support for the UAE, its territorial integrity and sovereignty. We commend the UAE for its continuing close engagement with the IAEA on nuclear safety.

Australia continues to support diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East. It is essential that Iran complies with Security Council Resolution 2817, ceases attacks and threats against neighbouring States, and agrees to a diplomatic solution that provides assurance that it can never obtain a nuclear weapon.

Chair,

Australia again expresses our deep appreciation to the IAEA for its continued efforts to uphold nuclear safety, security and safeguards, in accordance with its mandate. The dedicated and professional work of the IAEA’s staff, often in highly challenging circumstances, remains indispensable.

Thank you, Chair.
