Agenda item 5(e): Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic

10 June 2026

Statement delivered by Mr Mathew Fox, Alternate Representative of Australia to the IAEA

Chair,

Australia thanks Agency staff for their ongoing efforts regarding the implementation of safeguards in the Syrian Arab Republic, and continued dedication to resolving the outstanding safeguards issues relating to Syria’s previous nuclear activities.

Chair,

We thank the Director General for the update provided in his opening statement, and look forward to further reporting from the Agency, including the results of environmental sampling, site visits, and analysis.

Australia welcomes Syria’s engagement with the Agency and urges its continued assistance to support the Agency’s verification efforts, including through facilitating access to relevant locations and information pertaining to previous activities. Furthermore, Australia encourages Syria to bring into force an Additional Protocol, which would further demonstrate its commitment to strengthening the effectiveness of the safeguards system.

Chair,

Until all outstanding questions and concerns relating to Syria’s historical non-compliance are resolved, Australia supports the continued inclusion of this item on the agenda for future Board meetings. We once again thank the Director General for his efforts and for keeping Member States informed of developments.

Thank you, Chair.
