Agenda item 11: Any other business – Australia national statement

11 June 2026

Statement delivered by Mr Mathew Fox, Alternate Representative of Australia to the IAEA

Chair,

We thank the distinguished Governor from Japan for the information he provided on Japan’s security and non-proliferation policies.

Australia greatly values Japan’s steadfast support for the non-proliferation system, and for the work of the Agency. Japan’s cooperation with the IAEA on the implementation of Agency safeguards is exemplary.

Japan was one of the first states to conclude and bring into force an Additional Protocol, and the Agency has consistently drawn the Broader Conclusion for Japan over many years. We consider attempts to call into question Japan’s commitment to non-proliferation are entirely unfounded.

Chair,

Australia has repeatedly asserted its full confidence in the independent, impartial and science-based technical advice provided by the IAEA regarding the controlled discharge of ALPS-treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Australia appreciates the strong engagement and transparency displayed by Japan throughout the process and looks forward to continued collaboration between Japan and the IAEA as this important project progresses.

Australia also appreciates the dedicated efforts of Japan and the IAEA to engage with Pacific Island States on this issue.

Thank you, Chair.
